Brett is a graduate of the University of Toronto. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and Engineering with a minor in Sustainable Energy. Brett began his career in residential structural engineering for new construction of small buildings before shifting his focus to restoration and repair of existing buildings—first, to structural restoration, and then to building envelope restoration. Brett is experienced in construction details for repair and restoration of building envelopes of varying scopes and ages and conducts forensic investigations regarding wind, water, and fire losses.

30 Forensic Engineering is pleased to announce that Dr. Kamyab Zandi, M.Sc., Ph.D., Docent, has joined our Civil/Structural group as a Senior Associate. He will be based in our Vancouver office.

Kamyab (‘Kay’) received a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) and completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Materials & Mechanics at MIT (USA). Kay is the founding director of Timezyx, a construction technology company that develops Structural Digital Twins of infrastructure to enhance management of the built environment under extreme climate events. He is also an Affiliated Fellow at Standford University’s Structures and Composites Lab where he is the principal investigator of the research area Digital Twin of Civil Infrastructures.

The author of over 100 scientific articles, Kay is widely recognized for his expertise in and contribution to structural engineering, structural assessment and analysis, structural simulation and modelling, structural health monitoring, and structural codes and standardization.

30 Forensic Engineering Strengthens Civil Structural Group with the Appointment of Abrar Khan

Abrar Khan P.Eng., M.E.Sc., Intermediate Associate

Abrar obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), specializing in structural and transportation engineering. After graduation, he pursued a Masters of Engineering Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering degree at the University of Western Ontario (UWO). At UWO, Abrar joined Alan G. Davenport Wind Engineering Group as a Graduate Research Assistant where he worked on the ‘Three Little Pigs’ Research Project at The Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes. In his master’s program, he developed an experimental set-up to study the load-sharing phenomena between roof trusses of low-rise residential wood-framed houses and how it contributes to the overall failure of the roof under realistic high wind loads.

In his most recent experience he developed skills in dynamic analysis of structures for wind-induced structural responses and determining cladding design wind loads for façades based on wind tunnel testing on a variety of structures. Prior to that, he worked in a geotechnical laboratory performing soil and concrete testing. Abrar achieved his P.Eng. designation in 2016.

Paul brings over 20 years of experience in consulting engineering to the firm, primarily working on analysis and design of buildings, silos, furnaces, converters, crane beams etc. for heavy industry.

Having begun his career in telecommunications towers, he joined HG Engineering/Worley Parsons where he used advanced numerical analysis techniques for design, bridging the gap between structural and mechanical engineering. Paul also completed several failure analyses, providing economical solutions to fatigue failures and working with insurers. He later joined the Canadian Institute for Steel Construction, where he co-authored and presented the course on Industrial Building Design to engineers across Canada.

GK’s Civil/Structural Team Welcomes Paul Reinis!

Giffin Koerth is honoured to welcome our latest addition to the Civil/Structural Group – Paul Reinis.

Paul comes to GK with close to 20 years of experience ranging from designing and inspecting telecommunications towers across North America, managing heavy industrial projects in Africa, to designing and facilitating Structural Engineering courses for the Canadian Institute for Steel Construction. Paul has worked most recently with Quad Engineering where he spent the last 5 years as their top Civil/Structural Engineer, managing a team and helping to grow their structural group. Prior to that he spent 13 years with WorleyParsons in their structural group.

Outside of being a great engineer, Paul is a very active cyclist and he competes in numerous races all over Ontario and Canada; just last week Paul finished first in his class in the Provincial Mountain Bike Championships!
